South Africa's Material Boys
Meet the Izikhotane—a subculture among black youths in South Africa's townships who buy expensive designer clothes they cannot afford and then engage in elaborate dance-offs with rival gangs to demonstrate who is the most extravagant. Often, this involves destroying their clothing and setting fire to money.
It's not easy being an Izikhotane. In the twenty years since the first democratic elections, a strong black middle class has emerged in South Africa but the gap between rich and poor, already one of the widest in the world, has grown. Izikhotane are mostly teenagers from working class families who are obsessed with appearing wealthy despite their modest means. Some observers believe it's a way to escape the poverty around them. Others say it simply reflects a "culture of bling."

While Cassim’s career is going reasonably well, he performs mostly to Johannesburg Muslim audiences. He is frustrated; he wants more, he wants to expand his audience and his range and get better at what he does. His best friend Yusuf (Joey Rasdien) has inadvertently become his agent. Yusuf is extremely well-meaning but is slipping increasingly further out of his depth. He has planned a national tour for Cassim to expand his horizons.
One of the many problems is they have to get sponsorship from the notorious Laudium businessman Shabir Sulabie (Rajesh Gopie) to get the tour on the road. Shabir is heir to the Sulabie Chicken Bite empire and fancies himself as a showman. Yusuf believes it’s worth the risk and so the ill-fated tour begins.
From the outset, the tour is beset with problems and soon veers completely out of control with a megalomaniacal Shabir wanting to share the stage with Cassim. It ends with their tour Kombi in flames and their fellow comedian Schalk (Schalk Bezuidenhout) having to defend them from Shabir’s muscle men with his questionable martial arts skills.
Cassim and Yusuf’s relationship is in tatters when he accepts an offer from flamboyant agent Gayton Silver (Kurt Schoonraad) to do a stint at the Montreal comedy fest. This is exactly what Cassim wanted. Or is it?
Cassim soon realizes that he will have to make huge compromises. His faith is tested, his father’s health is suffering, and his marriage comes under intense pressure. Gayton wants him to change his material completely and endorse alcohol brands and soon Cassim needs to reassess everything he thought he wanted.
